Microsoft exec calls it 'a great milestone' for Bing and Yahoo!
It's web history in the making as Yahoo! and Microsoft both announced that Bing technology is now officially powering Yahoo!'s search results in the United States and Canada, with other markets to follow.
The news comes almost a year after the two companies entered into a ten-year search and advertising deal that sees Microsoft power Yahoo!'s search while Yahoo! takes over search sales for both companies.
Last month the companies started testing organic (also referred to as ‘algorithmic') and paid search listings from Microsoft for up to 25% of Yahoo! search traffic in the United States, before making the announcement of a successful transition yesterday.
"Yahoo! Web, Image, and Video search experiences on both desktop and mobile devices are now powered by the Microsoft platform in the US and Canada (English), with more markets to come. The speed in which this was completed is a testament to the great work and partnership between a number of Yahoo! and Microsoft employees, the ranks of which are numerous," wrote Shashi Seth, senior VP of Yahoo! Search Products, in a company blog post.
"This is a great milestone for Bing and Yahoo! and our customers, and we are happy to report the transition has gone smoothly and we feel great about the progress our search alliance has been making over the summer," stated Satya Nadella , senior VP, Online Services Division at Microsoft.
While only English search results have transitioned so far, Nadella adds that "other languages will come in the weeks and months ahead".
