Etisalat to launch VOD service in August
Etisalat seeks to tap growing demand for VOD services in the UAE
Etisalat plans to launch video on demand (VOD) services in the next two weeks, Humaid Al Suwaidi, CEO of Etisalat e-vision, was quoted as saying in The National news paper. Suwaidi said that Etisalat sees significant potential in the VOD market in the UAE, the report added.
Etisalat is following in the footsteps of its rival Du, which launched the first fully managed subscription video-on-demand offering over its IPTV platform in the UAE in December 2009.
The recent liberalisation of the telecom market by the UAE's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) is throwing the doors open for all players, especially Etisalat and Du, to compete aggressively to grab a major portion of the TV market.
The regional telecom companies, which have been slow to pick up on the VOD concept, are now seeing the potential for this service as consumer attitudes change towards watching movies and other programs at any time they want. And the trend is likely to grow, with the UAE IPTV market forecasted to see 36% growth a year by 2013, according to analysts.
