Vodafone Germany selects vendors for LTE
Vodafone will roll out its LTE network in Germany throughout 2011.

Vodafone's German unit has selected Huawei Technologies and Ericsson to upgrade its network to LTE.

Vodafone Germany plans to upgrade all of its base stations to LTE, and also extend the reach of its network, according to a report from Telegeography.

The company said this would ensure that broadband coverage is expanded to rural areas of the country, which is a condition of the 800MHz licence it won in Germany's spectrum auction in 2008.

The LTE deployment will begin in September 2010, with a plan to upgrade around 1,500 base stations in 2011, the report added.

Vodafone paid EUR1.21 billion ($ 1.55 billion) for two blocks of 5MHz spectrum in the 800MHz band, in the 2008 auction process.
