Surging demand for mobile broadband is leading to fierce rivalry for LTE patents.

US wireless technology specialist Qualcomm commands the greatest share of patents for LTE technology, with a 22% share of the market, giving it a clear lead over its nearest rival Interdigital, which has a 13% share of LTE patents, according to recent research from the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).

The figures put the US firms in a strong position to profit from the nascent LTE sector, which is projected to be worth 11.4 billion by 2014.

But the US firms face stiff competition from Asian competitors Huawei, Samsung and LG, which hold 11%, 10% and 9% of 168 essential LTE patents respectively.

Chinese vendor Huawei emerged as the telecom vendor with the largest share of LTE patents, with a 34% share, followed closely by Nokia on 26% and Ericsson on 18%.
