IBM and Blue Coat are extending their existing alliance to offer a new managed security service secure web gateway solution to organisations using Blue Coat appliances.

The new service will see IBM manage the security gateway using Blue Coat technology, in a hybrid model of cloud services combined with onsite solutions at client premises, to provide high levels of protection for clients, along with easier administration and compliance with security policies with a more modular and flexible approach to infrastructure investment.

The service will include a complete portfolio of solutions, which will be accessible through a web-based client portal, with ongoing monitoring and input from IBM's X-Force research team into emerging security threats. The gateway solution will deploy Blue Coat ProxySG and ProxyAV appliances at the Internet gateway for inline antivirus detection and IT policy enforcement; Blue Coat WebFilter for content categorization; the WebPulse service for dynamic ratings; and ProxyClient to extend protections and policies to remote users.

Nidal Taha, regional director for ME and Turkey, Blue Coat Systems said: "Our newly expanded relationship with IBM provides global enterprise clients with our industry-leading Secure Web Gateway solution managed by IBM to create a first line of defense against the numerous Web-based threats facing IT organizations today.

"Combining our security expertise and Web awareness with IBM's services expertise provides a unique, comprehensive solution that clients worldwide can use to better protect against Web-based threats and improve the overall manageability of their IT infrastructure," Taha added.

"While IBM and Blue Coat have been working together to help enterprise clients for nearly a decade, today's agreement provides a new addition to the IBM managed security services portfolio," said Marisa Viveros, vice president, IBM Security Services. "The combination of IBM Security's industry-leading managed security services and Blue Coat's enterprise-class solutions provides clients powerful, flexible and cost-effective protection for their infrastructure and information assets. Additionally, the IBM Secure Web Gateway service further rounds out our managed security services portfolio by adding to the existing multi-vendor and software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions in the URL and Web filtering space."
