Yankee Group predicts total US smartphone app downloads will exceed $11 billion in 2014

Google Android has been named the ‘next breakout app platform' by research firm Yankee Group in their latest report that analyses demand for smartphone applications in the United States.

Presently however the Apple App Store leads all other mobile application stores with more than 150,000 apps, with the Google Android Market coming in second nearly 20,000. Nokia's Ovi Store followes with a little over 6,000 smartphone apps.

Apple iPhone owners are also found to download far more apps than other handset owners, with roughly 60 apps per year which is more than three times the number of annual downloads for the average smartphone user.

Despite this, the Google Android platform is expected to add growth to the application economy and remains difficult to measure because phones running the OS are made by a variety of manufacturers including HTC, Motorola and Samsung.

"However, with 60,000 Android phones being shipped every day and nearly 20,000 apps in the Android Market, we believe that Android will be the next breakout app platform," the report states.

Based on Yankee Group estimates, total store revenue from application downloads will exceed $11 billion by 2014 in the United States alone.

It's not all good news though since the end of the mobile app ‘gold rush' is already in sight.

"While apps fill a necessary role today, we believe that Anywhere network connectivity will improve dramatically over the next five years. With that improvement, developers will begin to question the need to develop apps for six or more different smartphone platforms and will move toward more Web-based solutions that can work well on any platform with a full-featured Web browser," the Yankee report adds.
