Etisalat Afghanistan hits 3 million subscribers

Etisalat's Afghanistan subsidiary today announced that it has amassed almost three million subscribers.
Saeed Al Hamili, CEO of Etisalat Afghanistan, said: "Etisalat Afghanistan has achieved a number of milestones during three years of hard work. We managed to attract nearly three million customers and control 24% market share in 27 provinces in Afghanistan. In 2009 our revenues have grown three times compared to 2008."
He added that the telco has invested some US$300 million and pledged to expand into more areas of Afghanistan and introduce more voice and data services.
Etisalat signed an agreement with Afghan authorities in May 2006 to operate a GSM network across Afghanistan and become the fourth GSM operator in the country.
Etisalat chairman Mohammed Omran said: "Once we enter a market, we believe in offering continuous support for that market by investing in new technologies and infrastructure with the aim of deriving incremental gains over the life of our licence.
"When we decided to invest in the telecommunications sector of Afghanistan, we were aware of the scale of the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead , and it was the right decision to make.
Etisalat Afghanistan is 100% owned by the UAE-based group.
