Qtel has signed a purchasing agreement with Chinese vendor Huawei to support its development across its international markets.

As part of the agreement, which is initially for one year, Huawei will provide mobile infrastructure including base stations, circuit switches and transmission systems, as well as limited services.

Qtel and its subsidiaries will benefit from volume-based price discounts for network equipment as a result of the deal.

Dr Nasser Marafih, CEO, Qtel Group said: "In recent years, Huawei has emerged as an industry leader with extensive investment in research and development. As a strategic technology partner, Huawei has an opportunity for expansion of its footprint within the Qtel Group, to enhance our services and network portfolio."

The deal has an initial term of one year and may be extended by Qtel for up to two additional years. The value of the agreement was not disclosed.
