IDC predicts emerging markets will fuel more than half of new IT industry growth in 2010

Global IT spend to reach $1.5 trillion next year
IDC research claims the worldwide IT spend will reach $1.5 trillion in 2010.

Research firm IDC has predicted that global IT spend will rise by 3.2% in 2010, finally returning the industry to pre-recession spending levels of about $1.5 trillion.

It's believed that both IT and telecommunication markets will be dominated by the themes of recovery and transformation.

"In last year's predictions, we talked about how a slow global economy would act like a pressure cooker on the IT market, speeding the development and adoption of new technologies and business models," said Frank Gens, senior vice president and chief analyst at IDC. "What's different about 2010 is that the economic recovery will release some of the pressure on spending, enabling a number of transformational tipping points to be reached in a year of economic upswing."

Hardware, software and services spending will each grow in the 2-4% range with emerging markets driving more than half of the new IT industry growth in 2010. Telecommunications spending will also see a 3% rise driven by a rebound in the IP and data segments in mature markets and strong mobility growth in emerging economies.

IDC has identified the expansion of cloud services as the most important transformational element for the IT industry next year, even as mobile devices get set to compete with PCs as the preferred platform for both developers and users. By the end of 2009, IDC expects more than 1 billion mobile devices will be accessing the internet.
