Unusually shaped CDs remain a popular marketing tool despite consumers switching to other technologies for their own storage needs, says Germany-based Original Shape CD.

“People are still fascinated by the product,” says Regional Manager of Shape CD, Roman Wildberger.

“For promotional purposes it’s still a valid technology,” he adds.

The company was founded in Berlin in 1995 when two students discovered that the traditionally round CD could be produced in, well, virtually any shape, including hamburgers, hearts and company logotypes.

Today it derives around half its revenue from licensing its patented technology to other companies in the same space, and the other half from its own manufacturing business.

Original Shape CD also produces exotically shaped flash memory sticks, but CDs remain a mainstay of its overall product range.

“Each person who holds the Shape CD in his or her hand will be quite keen on finding out if the CD/DVD works properly. And this is your main advantage – your ad message is guaranteed to be heard or read – and this is the desired effect, isn’t it?” the company’s website states.

Among the company’s most popular products is the business card-shaped CD, which looks like a business card but can also include a presentation of a company or project.Other products include the Ticket CD, which can hold soundtracks and  other bonus material such as sponsorship messages.

“As of yet we cannot produce an edible CD, but we are working on it,” he adds.
