90,000 registered so far for .ae websites in UAE
Online campaign for UAE enters second phase, set to target new businesses.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) is targeting new UAE businesses in the second phase of its campaign to increase the number of .ae websites.
The main objective of the campaign is to target new businesses that have yet to register a domain name and also existing organisations who have not registered for a .ae domain name, the TRA said in a statement.
"In the period [August 2008 to August 2009] the number of new registrations increased by 30 percent compared to the corresponding period the year before," the telecoms watchdog said, adding that there were currently about 90,000 .ae websites registered.
Mohamed Naser Al Ghanim, TRA director general, said: "We encourage all companies and entities in UAE to move to .ae as it truly represents their UAE identity on the internet."
The most common usage in the region of domain names is .com, but Mohammed Gheyath, executive director, Technology Development Affairs, added: "There are many rational benefits to have a .ae domain name...It allows you to protect your web space, access the name you want for your domain name, and signal to your customers where your business is located."
Domain names ending in .com already has 80 million registered users, he added, compared to around 90,000 registered .ae domain names.
Gheyath said: "Having a .ae address is a big business tool that lets the company develop a unique national identity that positively communicates that the company is based in the UAE...Almost all German websites uses .de as they consider it a national pride."
