Auction sees Turkish domains selling for just $3
Domain name registry Dot TK accepts only paid registrations for Turkish domain names ending with .tk extension
The domain name registry Dot TK is conducting its first online auction that allows people to snap up a web address with a .tk extension in Turkey for as little as $3 a year.
Dot TK, a joint venture of the Government of Tokelau’s communication arm Teletok and privately-owned firm BV Dot TK, is known for distributing free domain names. In Turkey however, the company only accepts paid registrations for domain names ending with the .tk extension, which it states is doing really well.
In just one year since launching operations in Istanbul, Dot TK registered more Turkish domain names with the .tk extension than the official .tr top level domain.
".TR is the official top level domain in Turkey," says Joost Zuurbier, CEO of Dot TK. "To get a .TR domain you have to wait at least two weeks, send copies of your tax forms and pay at least 15 US dollars. Dot TK domains are cheap, as cheap as 3 US dollars per year. Our domains are easy to register and are available immediately. All these factors contribute to the decision that the Turkish people choose .TK domains over .TR ones."
Only generic domain names such as Futbol.tk, Artist.tk and Care.tk are being auctioned online through www.nic.tk
