PlayStation 3 goes on a diet
Slim and light console will make its UAE debut on September 1 for just AED 1,299
Sony is injecting new life into the video game console market by unveiling a lighter PlayStation 3 (PS3) that is around 30% smaller than its original model and more energy-efficient.
The slim PlayStation 3, which comes with a 120 GB hard disk drive, will be made available worldwide in September at a tempting retail price of $299 in the United States. Price cuts for its original PS3 edition have also been announced internationally.
Here in the Middle East, the new console will hit shelves on the 1st of September with an AED 1,299 price tag. The original PS3 edition will also be reduced to AED 1,299 from today onwards.
Sony is going all out to give the console a fresh take – it has modified the console’s brand name from PLAYSTATION 3 to PlayStation 3 to coincide with the launch, and a new PS3 logo is engraved on the system to reflect the change.
The company is facing tough competition from both Nintendo and Microsoft in the console arena. Earlier this year, Nintendo was crowned king of the next-generation consoles after announcing it sold more than 50 million Wii units worldwide, trumping Xbox 360 sales that hit only 28 million units by the end of 2008.
In comparison, Sony only managed to sell about 20 million units of its PS3 console last year.
