Dubai ruler among region's most popular on Facebook
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum now has 73,563 members of his online Facebook fan page
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is now among the most popular public figures on Facebook.
The ruler launched his fan page on the social networking site just over a month ago and now has 73,563 members, according to a report in the Khaleej Times.
He was forced to change his profile to a public page last month after being swamped with friend requests. Facebook only allows users with a private profile to have a maximum of 5,000 friends.
According to the paper, the most popular public figure in the region is Iran’s opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi, who has 114,283 fans. By comparison the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has 9,949 fans.
The region’s least popular public figure is the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, whose fan page only has 54 supporters, the paper said.
Sheikh Mohammed is also a member of the Twitter social networking site, which he signed up to in July.
