Phone retailer wades into notebook market

Company intends to stock a select range of Sony Vaio laptops and Apple MacBooks

In what could be deemed a courageous move given the notoriously slim margins associated with PC hardware, wireless retailer Fono has taken the decision to enter the notebook market.

The company, which for the last decade has specialised in mobile phone brands such as Nokia and Motorola, intends to stock a select range of Sony Vaio laptops and Apple MacBooks.

The retailer insists that consumer spending on new technology is still “robust” and believes it has the marketing and pricing strategies to make a success of the segment.

Fono also claims the diversification illustrates its “strong market position”, coming at a time when other retailers are reducing their portfolios due to the economic climate.

“Fono has triumphed in the mobile phone market, and we are now channelling our success and knowledge into the field of IT,” said the company’s management in a statement. “Fono’s evolution will see our stores become a one-stop-shop for all mobility needs as part of our strategy to provide mobiles, notebooks and accessories to our business and private customers,” it added.

Fono will kick off its foray into the notebook market by selling laptops at its Deira City Centre branch before making the products available through its other outlets later in the year.

Fono, a sister company of Axiom Telecom after being acquired by Al Bannai Enterprises six years ago, also has franchise operations in Bahrain.
