Abu Dhabi's SEHA continues Cerner HIT roll out

Al Rahba Hospital latest to get healthcare information systems from Cerner as part of SEHA project

Al Rahba Hospital in Abu Dhabi has completed deployment of Cerner healthcare solutions to help automate and improve its processes.

The deployment, part of an ongoing project by the Abu Dhabi health services company SEHA, has implemented several healthcare information systems (HIT) for the 163-bed hospital.

The hospital has rolled out Cerner Millennium solutions to create an electronic medical records (EMR) system, which will help to cut errors and make patient data available more easily across all SEHA facilities. Data including radiology images and lab results can also be shared more easily between facilities.

The Cerner systems will also automate a number of functions including registration, scheduling, surgery, pharmacy, pathology, radiology and emergency departments. Safety will also be improved through automated systems, such as knowledge-based alerts to warn of potentially harmful interactions between prescriptions.

Muhammad Al Quaid, CIO of Al Rahba Hospital commented: “Cerner Millennium solutions allow our clinicians to provide safer, more efficient care to patients. The unified Cerner Millennium electronic medical record that Al Rahba Hospital will share with the rest of the SEHA facilities provides doctors and nurses with real-time patient information and access to evidence-based protocols designed to improve clinician knowledge and prevent medical errors.”

SEHA is a joint stock company that manages Abu Dhabi’s public hospitals, with responsibility for 12 hospitals and 55 ambulatory and primary health clinics. The project to update its systems has so far extended to 4 hospitals, 11 primary health clinics and four ambulatory health clinics.

John R Hawkins, SEHA information and technology director said: “SEHA has committed to implementing a system-wide EMR for all of its hospitals and clinics as part of its vision to create a connected healthcare system and to improve the quality of care in Abu Dhabi. SEHA chose Cerner as its HIT supplier because of Cerner’s ability to support big scale implementations and its proven expertise in delivering innovative healthcare technology solutions around the world.”

“By working together, SEHA, Al Rahba Hospital and Cerner have been able to quickly and efficiently optimize and automate Al Rahba’s clinical processes,” said Richard Berner, Cerner Middle East vice president and general manager. “Cerner is proud to work with these visionary organizations to help improve patient care, clinician satisfaction and further connect the UAE health community through the use of technology.”
