Etisalat signs deal with football giant Barcelona

UAE phone major poised to bring Spanish club to UAE as part of four-year agreement.

Football giant Barcelona could soon be playing in the UAE under a new agreement between the Spanish club and UAE phone major Etisalat.

The telecom operator has signed a four-year partnership agreement with FC Barcelona to become the club's official international telecom partner. Although no official figures have been released, reports suggest the deal would be worth about $15 million.

The deal involves the right for Etisalat to organise two international football matches between Barcelona and any team named by Etisalat - in the UAE or any other country where Etisalat operates.

The Etisalat deal will give its 80 million customers in 18 countries the chance to watch the club in action via their mobile phones.

“The aim of FC Barcelona is worldwide presence and this agreement will allow us to strengthen our image and presence in the Middle East, Africa and Asia,” said Joan Laporta Estruch, the president of FC Barcelona.

Etisalat Board chairman Mohammed Hassan Omran added: “Football represents the values of ambition, group performance, team spirit, solidarity and leadership, which are the same values embodied by etisalat in all of its international markets.”
