Report: 35 million netbooks will be shipped in 2009
ABI Research forecasts a ‘market explosion’ for netbooks over the next few years
Technology research firm ABI Research has predicted a ‘market explosion’ for netbooks over the next few years with 35 million shipments expected this year alone.
In the company's latest report, Mobile Devices Annual Market Overview, it highlights several reasons for netbooks' mass appeal including factors such as small size, light weight and low-cost processors, making it an economical yet productive choice.
IDC’s latest Worldwide PC Tracker report also supports ABI Research claims, foreseeing shipments of netbooks to double in 2009 from nearly 10 million in 2008.
While many regard smartphones and even MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices) as present competition for the popular netbook, Kevin Burden practice director at ABI Research disagrees.
"In recent years, the industry still expected the smartphones to be more than they turned out to be, and most recently, MIDs were thought to be the next big mobile devices segment, but an unclear usage model continues to confuse the market. So today, netbooks’ time has come…."
The firm forecasts worldwide shipments of netbooks will rise to an estimated 139 million in 2013.
