Facebook tops global social networks
Visitors to the website from the Middle East & Africa region increased by 403 percent.
According to a study on worldwide usage of social networking sites released by comScore, Facebook is now officially the leading global social network.
It beats close rival MySpace in worldwide audience growth with 63% of Facebook users located outside North America. The Middle East & Africa region showed a remarkable 403% increase in unique visitors to the website compared to last year.
Facebook.com witnessed a 153% growth largely due to its efforts to become more culturally relevant in markets outside the United States by introducing natural language interfaces.
The study further highlighted that growth in new social networking users is increasing in regions around the world, but reportedly declining in North America.
When compared to Europe, Asia Pacific, North America and Latin America, the highest social networking growth was recorded in Middle East & Africa with 30,197 unique visitors in June 2008, up 66% from just 18,226 visitors recorded in the same month last year.
