Microsoft demos touch for Windows 7
Next version of Windows to include multi-touch interface, Gates and Ballmer reveal
Microsoft has revealed that the next version of its Windows operating system - Windows 7 - will include a multi-touch interface as standard.
Chairman Bill Gates and CEO Steve Ballmer presented a short demonstration of the new operating system at the D: All Things Digital conference in California.
While the demonstration did not give much away, Microsoft has already debuted two touch interface devices, and Gates told the audience that touch would become increasingly important.
"Today almost all the interaction is keyboard-mouse," Gates said. "Over years to come, the role of speech, vision, ink - all of those - will be huge."
Windows 7 is due to be introduced late next year.
