Koein and Maktoob big winners at Pan Arab Web Awards
Winners of Pan Arab Web Awards 2008 announced in Dubai
The 2008 Pan Arab Web Awards were held this week at Dubai's Burj Al Arab hotel, with web company Koein and Maktoob.com two of the event's key winners.
More than 125 websites and agencies received recognition at the gathering, which was held in association with Microsoft and the Business Software Alliance (BSA).
The contest's Best Arabic Website award went to the site www.as7ab.maktoob.com, whilst Koein won the Web Company of the Year prize.
The Best Web Technology Award meanwhile went to the English-to-Arabic search engine Yamli.com (Yamli means dictate in Arabic), and Paravision.org bagged the Gold prize in the Best Web Design and Software Development Company category.
One of the event's biggest winners in recent years, Dubai-based web design agency Cactimedia, failed to win any awards this year, as did another major digital agency Flip Media.
The 2008 competition received an unprecedented number of registrants and expanded its reach across the region, according to Pierre Moukarzel, the president of the Web Awards programme in the Arab region. "We had representatives before in Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Oman, UAE and Qatar, but we expanded to welcome new representatives in Bahrain, Kuwait, Yemen and Saudi Arabia," Moukarzel said.
