British University in Dubai hosts AI school

Workshop and seminar series held in partnership with Tejari to develop artificial intelligence ideas

The British University in Dubai (BUiD), in partnership with e-trading specialist Tejari, has completed the opening event in its new Artificial Intelligence research program.

The Dubai Agents & Multi-Agents System (DAMAS) School, took place last week, with the aim of updating the region's IT professionals on developments in the field of distributed AI, and to enable co-operation on future developments.

The school comprised a series of workshops and lectures, covering ‘multi-agent systems' computer systems comprised on several autonomous, intelligent, communicating systems. The technology has a number of possible commercial applications, including automated trading, grid computing, intelligent workflow systems.

"We are thrilled with the successful response to the opening of DAMAS, one of the first major events organised by BUiD's Autonomous and Adaptive Systems research group," said Dr. Abdullah Alshamsi, vice chancellor of BUiD. "The key DAMAS objective is to enable a wide range of local IT professionals to collaborate in an innovative learning environment, outside their regular places of work."

The courses included sessions from AI experts leading academic establishments including Duke University, the University of Edinburgh, and the University of Michigan. Sessions were open to all IT professionals, to encourage dialogue.

Luca Gorlero, director of New Ventures at Tejari commented: "Tejari welcomed the opportunity to contribute to a programme of teaching and activity that has drawn IT leaders into practical opportunities for development of the most advanced thinking in this field while retaining a vocational edge. This is a unique opportunity to learn about the latest development in AI and its applications in a variety of field."
