Vodafone trumps Etisalat in Qatar

UAE operator will not bid for Qatar's second fixed-line licence after losing mobile phone contest.

UAE operator Etisalat will not bid for Qatar's second fixed-line telephone licence after losing a mobile phone contest this month, an executive said in comments published on Monday.

Qatar awarded a mobile phone licence to Vodafone Group Plc this month, ending the monopoly of Qtel in the oil and gas producer, home to 840,000 people.

The country's telecom regulator last week named Etisalat as one of five firms and groups that had expressed interest in bidding for a fixed-line licence in the first quarter.

Etisalat does not intend to bid for the licence because it did not win the mobile phone bid, said Jamal Al-Jarwan, chief executive of Etisalat's international investments, according to the Al-Ittihad daily.

Etisalat was seriously considering a bid for a mobile phone licence in Lebanon, Al-Jarwan added. (Reuters)
