iPhone to make debut

The Apple iPhone will make its Middle East debut at this year's GITEX Technology Week when Pro Technology will display the unit at its stand in the Office Technology & Supplies section of the show.

"We will be showcasing the device in hall four along with the rest of our Apple devices and this is something we are very excited about," claims Pro Technology founder and CEO Jamal Maraqa.

"The models we will display will be compatible for this region and attendees of the show will be able to try out the piece to get a real feel for it," he adds.

The iPhone was launched into the US market during the second quarter of this year, and although the device's official Middle East launch date has yet to be confirmed, Maraqa claims the device will be available in the Middle East as early as one month after this year's show.

"Apple has said the phone will be launched in this market in November or December but I think the device will be available before that date," he states. Maraqa speculates that the much-anticipated device will retail for approximately 10-15% more than its US price tag of US$500.

"The iPhone is scheduled for an October launch in the European market and as soon as that happens we should have access to those stocks and we'll be able to bring them to the market," says Maraqa.

In addition to the iPhone, Pro Technology will also be showcasing a number of other regional firsts such as a mobile memory drive with a massive capacity of 250Gbytes. Explaining the key importance of GITEX Technology Week to his company, Maraqa claims the expo is simply so valuable because of its wide appeal, as it draws in potential customers from not only the Middle East, but geographies as far away as East, West and Central Africa.

"A few years ago for instance we used the platform the event provides to secure a deal with the Afghanistan government to supply them with back-up and storage solutions," he explains. "That's the kind of business that we've found this show can lead to."
