The networking giant has announced plans to invest US$150 million in VMware, which is owned by software manufacturer EMC Corporation.

Cisco said it hopes the move will enable it to strengthen collaboration between the two firms and speed up customer adoption of VMware virtualisation products on its networking infrastructure.

Cisco's purchase follows Intel's US$218.5 million investment in US-based VMware earlier this month.
