New Arab networking site under formation

Maktoob.com and faye3.com have teamed up to develop an Arab social networking site, according to a local newspaper report.

Maktoob.com and faye3.com have teamed up to develop an Arab social networking site, according to a local newspaper report.

The two sites are working on a joint initiative aimed at providing a service that will allow Arab communities to link up online and share contacts, Emirates Today reported.

"A significant number of Arabs seek online social communication through non-Arabic websites," Samih Toukan, chief executive of internet services company Maktoob told the newspaper. "The world is developing in online communications and the Arab world should not be lagging behind."

The initiative comes shortly after Etisalat banned social networking site Orkut.com upon orders from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

The TRA issued a formal letter to the UAE's internet service providers to block the Google-owned site after receiving complaints that the site posted objectionable material.
