USR drafts in extra distributor

Active appointed to grow share of switches market.

USRobotics is enlarging its distribution channel in an effort to improve its share of classic networking products such as switches, hubs and network cards.

The company has named Active IT Distribution as its third GCC distributor to sit alongside Almasa and Aptec. Although Active has access to USR's wider portfolio it has been brought on board to specifically develop the market for products such as switches.

Parvez Ahmed, boss of Active, said: "USR has great brand equity in the region and they are doing very well in the wireless ADSL category and so on. Our value add will be focused distribution in the networking product lines where USR's market share is less than what it should be."

Sumit Kumar, regional manager MENA at USR, believes Active will offer the vendor extensive reach into the SMB market: "They will be able to address the small networking companies and resellers who do not have access to broadline distributors for various reasons. Somebody who has to buy two switches, for example, does not like to go to the broadline distributors because of the formalities."

USR is the third brand, along with SMC Networks and cabinet vendor Toten, that Active has signed to its newly-created networking unit.
