MobiSwap to ease 050 burden

Lebanon-based mobile services specialist MobiKick SARL is developing a solution named ‘MobiSwap’ to help UAE users change their mobile phone contacts before December’s 050 deadline.

Lebanon-based mobile services specialist MobiKick SARL is developing a solution named ‘MobiSwap’ to help UAE users change their mobile phone contacts before December’s 050 deadline. From December 15 onwards, the UAE’s telecoms regulator – the TRA – is requiring residents to prefix any Etisalat mobile phone numbers with 050; a move that pre-empts the launch of telco ‘du’s own phone services thereafter. The aim of MobiSwap is to help users automatically update all their Etisalat mobile phone contacts, rather than having to manually amend each stored contact number. “We are currently finishing the testing of our solution for different kind of mobiles: Pocket PCs, Windows smartphones, Nokia phones and more,” Moussa Azar, MobiKick’s managing partner, told Windows Middle East magazine. Azar claims the system will be very easy-to-use. Phone users will simply need to download software onto their phone and start the program. MobiSwap will then send an automatic SMS activation request to MobiKick and once activated the software will add the 050 prefix to all the phone numbers that require it (both numbers stored in the phone’s memory and those stored on the SIM card). The cost of the service will be AED10, which will be charged via the premium-rate SMS. The system is expected to launch on the second or third of December and will be advertised across the Emirates. Windows Mobile device specialist i-mate is also in the process of developing a 050 software solution. This will be made freely available shortly to its customers via the firm’s Club i-mate website.
