More investment needs to be made in people in the Arab world if the region is to capitalise on the opportunities that rapid changes in ICT are creating, according to Google CEO Eric Schmidt.

Speaking in the run-up to his appearance as co-chair of this week’s Arab Strategy Forum (ASF) in Dubai, Schmidt said the Middle East still had to overcome challenges such as poverty, high illiteracy, and a lack of entrepreneurial spirit.

“This region has an abundance of assets, a young population, fast growing economies, and a unique strategic geographical location, but still faces poverty in some parts, high illiteracy rates and a sub-par entrepreneurial spirit,” Schmidt commented.

The CEO highlighted the areas of health, education, training and employment as key in driving the region’s development.
