EgyptAir to tap into subcontinent

EgyptAir has revealed plans to reinstate a twice-weekly service from Sharjah to Bombay next summer in a bid to serve VFR traffic and onward leisure passengers from the subcontinent.

EgyptAir has revealed plans to reinstate a twice-weekly service from Sharjah to Bombay next summer in a bid to serve VFR traffic and onward leisure passengers from the subcontinent.

The new route will be one of several seasonal services the carrier operates from the Northern Emirates during the summer, to cater to higher demand during this peak outbound season.

“A lot of people come through the UAE to get to Egypt, particularly from the Indian subcontinent,” explained Mahmoud M Kamel, Dubai sales manager, EgyptAir.

“The service is very popular for those heading both to Sharjah and onward to Egypt, so we hope to have it up-and-running again this year.”

EgyptAir also operates flights to Cairo from Ras al Khaimah and Fujairah from June to August, and according to Kamel, a new service between Sharjah and Assuit could also be on the cards.

EgyptAir claimed competitors such as Air Arabia have had little impact on the number of passengers choosing to fly EgyptAir, thanks to high demand for seats and the different service offering it offered.

According to EgyptAir’s annual traffic report, the carrier currently boasts a 39.3% market share of all air traffic flying between Dubai and Cairo, amounting to 82,709 passengers between July 2005 and June 2006.

The airline currently operates daily flights to Cairo from Abu Dhabi, and nine weekly flights from Dubai.

A direct flight to Alexandria leaves Dubai twice a week, and Abu Dhabi once weekly, and weekly flights from Dubai to Sharm el Sheikh are set to recommence next month.
