Malaysian IT focus
MDeC is using GITEX to promote collaboration between IT companies in Malaysia, and those in the Middle East.
Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), a company set up by the Malaysian government, is using GITEX as a platform to establish and promote collaboration between IT companies in Malaysia and the Middle East.
The company is attending the show to push MSC Malaysia, a new initiative which aims to promote ICT in Malaysia both locally and globally. "We are here to invite the Middle East to look at investment opportunities in investing in ICT in Malaysia," Badlisham Ghazali CEO of MDeC said at a press conference at GITEX announcing the initiative.
The initiative is two-fold, Ghazali explained. First, it aims to bring Asian companies to the Gulf. Second, it is about inviting gulf companies and authorities to Malaysia.
"Over the coming year, MDeC's goal will be to help build Malaysia's role as a strategic IT partner to organizations in the Middle East. We have the capability and the resources and we share commonalities in our visions for growth and development. This strengthens our position as a key provider of technology products and services to the region," MDeC CEO Badlisham Ghazali said.
MDeC is also promoting Malaysia as a strong region for outsourcing. "Malaysia offers itself as a destination of choice for outsourcing opportunities," Ghazali said.
The company is pursuing a number of projects in the region over the coming year including Smart Card systems for the Ministries of Hajj and Interior in Saudi, Court Systems and Smart School content in the UAE and Oman, and cooperation in Islamic content and entertainment in Egypt.
MDeC kicked off the initiative with a significant presence at GITEX. Sixteen companies from Malaysia participated in the Malaysian pavilion this year plus eight other companies in other parts of the show in comparison to around 10 companies in previous years.
To develop closer relations with the Middle East, the company now intends to set up a presence in the UAE. It already has a direct office in Jeddah and is now in discussion with other countries to set up representation in the UAE, Iran and Syria.
