Genusys unfazed by UAE’s VoIP ban

VOICE OVER internet protocol (VoIP) firm, Genusys, has declared itself unfazed by current UAE restrictions, dubbing the regional VoIP revolution ‘a matter of time’.

“The market will be huge,” says Anis Rahman, Genusys CEO. “In Qatar, there are plans to open up protocols; in Bahrain, some private companies and one government company already have VoIP; the UAE will follow.”

The GITEX debutante hopes to get ahead of the game by providing VoIP technology direct to telecommunications companies. It has been speculated that regional providers, Etisalat and Du both plan to offer consumer packages in the future.

“For the last three years we have been service providers,” says Rahman. “Now we have the means for telecommunication companies to build their own infrastructure.”

With the UAE’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) currently banning all consumer VoIP services, Genusys may face an uphill struggle. However, the company has gamely tackled its first GITEX hurdle, after discovering it had booked a stand in the wrong hall.

“Unfortunately we are not booked in the right place,” says Rahman. “But this is our first time here and next year, we will have our stand in the telecommunications area.

"However, we are part of the USA stand, so hopefully we will still get plenty of visitors.”
