Intel wants to be inside your living room, not just your PC. The technology powerhouse is driving the digital home revolution and is showcasing solutions that take mobility and entertainment to the next level. Charlotte Lamprecht, Intel’s global director of digital home brand management, arrived at GITEX yesterday to explain the vendor’s strategy.
“This is an area of growing importance for Intel as entertainment goes digital,” said Lamprecht. “We are already starting to see the availability of localised entertainment content in this region and people want to enjoy this throughout their home. New technologies such as Intel Viiv — Intel’s premier brand for PCs — gives consumers the technology that they need to access, share and manage digital media.”
Lamprecht claims that the Middle East has massive potential for Intel’s digital home initiatives. “I think that as far as the digital home goes the world is flat. By that I mean there is no reason why the Middle East cannot be a leader in this field. Cities such as Dubai are as tech-savvy as any other city in the world.”
While increased broadband penetration will play a pivotal role in the adoption of digital home technologies, it is not a prerequisite.
“I think that broadband penetration is actually a phase two element for digital home adoption,” Lamprecht continues. “There is so much that can be done inside the digital home that does not require incredibly fast internet access. There is also a phase three, which is fibre to the home and that allows incredible entertainment options such as the streaming of high definition TV content into the home.”
Intel is also playing a powerful role in the adoption of common standards in the digital home space, working hand-in-hand with vendors to make installation and deployment as simple as possible for consumers.
“Common standards in the industry are critical to the growth of the digital home,” stresses Lamprecht. “It is all about ease of use and only geeks would actually enjoy making everything work together. Standards are key to making implementation a pleasurable experience and the industry as a whole is clearly moving forwards but we have to keep trying to move even faster in this space.”
