Dubai Polices' crackdown on rogue drivers now extends to anyone who attempts to alter the details on their
driving licence, thanks to a new printing solution.

Working with the IT department Eastnets, a leading provider of payment and security solutions and partner of Zebra Card Printer Solutions, the police were able to develop tamper-proof cards for driving licences and vehicle registrations.

The solution will meet an estimated demand of one million cards in the first year and more than 80 Zebra Card printers have been deployed across the emirate to support it.

A spokesperson for Dubai Police says: “Dubai Police is committed to becoming recognised leaders in technology implementation in the region. Electronic architecture for service delivery is becoming a key tenet of public security and safety in today's fast-paced world. We constantly evaluate new technology to keep pace with global developments and provide efficient and secure services.”

The new solution, known as Bitaqat-e, will enable the police to access and keep track of vital information at a faster speed than previously possible, and should assist in preventing frauds and misuse. It provides a highly secure, fully parameterised card management and issuing system for Dubai Police across 50 police stations. The system has the ability to store citizen information including name, date of birth, address and a compressed photographic or biometric image of the bearer.

Hazim Mulhim, CEO of Eastnets, says: “Bitaqat-e solution has been developed to provide card technology to organisations that have critical services remits, such as Dubai Police, Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department and financial institutions. The technology is not only tamper-proof but also contains all essential information through highly secure components that are embedded in each card enabling data portability, security and ease of use.”

At GITEX, Zebra will be touting its latest P430i desktop plastic card printer and encoder for mission-critical applications in corporations and government agencies.
