Intel unleashes quad-core CPUs

Intel Corporation debuted its Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5300 and Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processor families to the Middle East market at yesterday’s GITEX, and claimed the technology heralded the dawn of a new multi-core PC era.

Samir Al Schamma, Intel’s general manager for the GCC, explained that quad-core processors – four computing “brains” inside one single processor – delivered immense speed, plus responsiveness, for general purpose servers, workstations, digital media creation, high-end gaming and other market segments where performance is paramount.

“The capabilities of quad-core microprocessors will bring new possibilities for science, entertainment and business,” said Al Schamma. “Today’s announcement ushers in another new era in computing,” he added.

According to Intel, Quad-core Intel Xeon Processor 5300 series servers provide more headroom for server virtualisation than any other two-processor standard high-profile server platform. The new processors perform up to 50% faster, but at the same cost as the previous generation Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor 5100 series.

Intel also claims the Intel Core 2 Extreme quad-core processor QX6700, a desktop processor for multimedia apps, performs up to 80% faster than the company’s current Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor X6800.

A mainstream quad-core processor will hit stores in the first quarter next year under the brand name Intel Core 2 Quad processor.
