Forefront and Plasmon serious about storage

Regional IT distributor Forefront Technologies has brought a key American partner to GITEX this week as it looks to bolster its position as a leading distributor of both document management and storage solutions across the region.

Accompanying Forefront’s regional sales manager, Johnni R. Jabbor, on the firm’s hall 3 stand is Dr. Stefano Porri, the Southern Europe and Middle East director of Plasma, with which Forefront signed a major distribution deal earlier on this year.

“Plasmon produces a range of professional storage solutions that we believe there’s real demand for in this market, in particular from companies that require a second tier of storage,” claims Jabbor.

Plasmon is an American-based company that manufacturers storage jukeboxes or libaries that are based on Ultra Density Optical (UDO) drive technology. These solutions are available in configurations ranging from 24 media slots up to 638 slots (this maximum figure representing approximately 19.1 terabytes of data capacity, or 638 multiplied by 30Gigabytes per individual piece of media).

“Usually this kind of solution is used for information lifecycle management applications; data and e-mail archiving for instance. It basically provides an entire second tier of storage. If you want to archive terabytes of storage, you might need the information once or three times only, for which this is an ideal solution,” Jabbor adds.

Plasmon itself recently announced a brand new solution in the form of its UDO Archive Appliance, which is a mix of UDO technology and NAS RAID storage. “The idea with this solution is that users can save their data on the RAID box, then after a certain period of time the application will automatically move the data onto the UDO media,” Porri explains. Users can then remove data discs and store these at a safe external location.

This solution was first produced for the medical division of GE’s installed user base in Europe. Recently however Forefront has provided devices to GE in KSA.
