ABB to spark up Dubal systems

Power group ABB has taken a US $39 million (AED143 million) contract to upgrade systems at Dubal’s aluminium smelter plant in Dubai.

The project includes replacing five high-voltage regulating rectifier transformers with larger units, rated at 86MVA, to increase capacity and allow Dubal to combine two smelting potlines.

Rectifiers are devices that convert alternating current to direct current.

Dubal operates the largest single-site aluminum smelter in the region, with an annual output exceeding 850,000 tonnes. Commissioning of the new ABB systems will begin during July 2007 and is set for completion in March 2008.
