Patrick Antaki, the general manager of Le Meridien Al Aqah in Fujairah, has been awarded general manager of the year at the 2006 Hotelier Middle East awards, which took place at the Park Hyatt Dubai last night (Sunday, November 12).

Antaki was one of three shortlisted GMs in the much anticipated awards category, which was also contested by Thorsten Ries from The Ritz-Carlton, Doha and Chahnaz Gayraud from the Coral Boutique Hotel & Coral Villas, Dubai.

The winner, who has already won a host of awards for his achievements since opening Le Meridien Al Aqah three years ago, was not only noted for effectively marketing the hotel and its attributes, but also for his efforts to aggressively promote Fujairah, which is now a renowned East Coast holiday getaway for European and GCC travellers alike.

Antaki was praised for his “hands-on approach and ability to empower and inspire employees”, according to the judges.

Now in their third year, the Hotelier Middle East awards recognise the unsung heroes of the hotel industry across 15 categories, from PR and marketing to laundry manager.

This year’s judging panel included Ron Hilvert, managing director of Emirates Academy of Hospitality Management; Alen Thong, secretary of the Emirates Culinary Guild; Kerry van der Zyl, director of recruitment company, Kerry Roberts Associates; Lorna Clarke, executive director of the HotelBenchmark – Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure, at Deloitte & Touche; Kate Bowery, director of Dubai-based event management company, MVM events; and two ITP judges; Gemma Greenwood, editor, Arabian Travel News and Laura Barnes, deputy editor, Caterer Middle East.

The judges sifted through more than 1000 online nominations creating a shortlist of three in each category and then finally identifying the outright winner in each.

Another of the most coveted awards, Hotelier’s Hotelier of the year, which recognises the back-of-house heroes who go that extra mile to brighten the lives of their guests and fellow employees, was presented to Jacob Ekere, loss prevention leader at The Ritz-Carlton, Doha.

The property’s director of PR, Marie Cazaux, was also rewarded, receiving the PR/Marketing person of the year award.
