Batelco pushes ahead with HSDPA deployment

The service will provide high-speed internet capabilities (with download speeds of up to 14.4 Mbps), allowing users to access media rich applications and services such as video services, rapid email downloads, advanced multi-player games, high-resolution digital images and CD quality music downloads.

Leading Bahrani telecommunications service provider Batelco will be launching their nationwide 3G and HSDPA service later this year. This project will be in cooperation with Ericsson, which will be assisting Batelco in launching and managing its network. Ericsson will deliver the commercial HSDPA System, enabling Batelco to mobilise its ‘Broadband Bahrain’ initiative through the provision of wireless broadband services including a suite of advanced multimedia solutions.

Chief executive of Batelco Peter Kaliaropoulos stated that he did not want to rush into deploying 3G network infrastructure until sufficient handsets were made available in the market and until Batelco’s operating needs required the progression toward 3G services. Kaliaropoulos believes the time is right to launch HSDPA and is intent on ensuring Bahrain has the most comprehensive wireless broadband offerings.

“We aim to continue delivering leading-edge telecommunication mobile and data services to consumers and businesses by adopting relevant new technologies as they become available on the market and making Bahrain a world class ICT hub,” said Kaliaropoulos.

Johan Lojdquist, general manager of Ericsson Bahrain, reinforced this aim by committing to providing Batelco with the “competitive edge” in the domestic market, through the supplier’s expertise in the HSDPA arena.
