Camels' milk taps new markets
Camels' milk is gaining a wider audience, with various new products reaching the market in recent months.
While camels’ milk has traditionally been a staple food for local Arabs, the product is now gaining a wider audience owing to a greater awareness of its health benefits, as well as the appearance of new products on the market.
And now, with the opening of Emirates Industry for Camel Milk & Products (EICMP), a UAE-based camel milk producer, the product is set to gain even greater popularity in the region.
Indeed, EICMP which opened in the UAE recently, has already launched a range of camel’s milk products in the country, which are being rolled out under the ‘Camelicious’ brand. The company’s main product is plain camel’s milk, which is available in distinctive 250ml, 500ml, 1 litre and 2 litre bottles at Union Co-op supermarkets. The company is also producing flavoured milk, available in the same size bottles, except for 2 litre packs.
“Camel milk has always been a traditional staple of the Bedouins throughout the Middle East, and our research has now scientifically proven that it has incredible health benefits,” said Hareb Juma Bin Subaih, general manager of EICMP.
The health benefits of Camelicious milk certainly look likely to help encourage sales. Research by leading scientists at the Central Vetinary Research Laboratory, the world’s leading camel milk research institute, have proven that Camelicious has less than half the fat of cows’ milk, and drinking half a litre a day provides the recommended daily requirement of Vitamin C. It is rich in natural vitamins and minerals, and is known to boost the immune system.
Emirates Industry for Camel Milk & Products is a state-of-the-art milk production facility based in Dubai, operating to stringent EU health and hygiene regulations. Camelicious is ideal for people with allergies or lactose intolerance. The milk also aids cardio-vascular functioning and can help lower cholesterol. Camel milk has also been used by women for its anti-ageing and beauty benefits, due to its natural healing properties, according to EICMP.
“Emirates Industry for Camel Milk & Products was initially established as a pilot project in 2000 with just 20 camels. It’s an exciting time for us to be finally launching Camelicious to the market. We are convinced that camel milk will not only appeal to local taste-buds, but that the wider community will also benefit from its life-enriching properties,” Subaih said.
