Arabic edutainment channel, Al Jazeera Children’s Channel, will broadcast its first cartoon series Kalila wa Dimna from this month. The series, which has been in production for the last two-and-a-half years, cost the channel US $2 million to produce. The series is being recorded and produced at Tiger Production’s studio in Syria; a major Arab international production house specialised in cartoon and educational film productions.

“JCC is proud to present this well-known literacy and heritage long been enjoyed by children and adults alike,” says Mahmoud Bouneb, executive general manager of Al Jazeera Children’s Channel. “This classic collection of fables aims at providing Arab children with educational, social and moral advice. It is a valuable tool for parents and children to communicate and spend quality time together.”

The Kalila wa Dimna cartoon series is based on the Arabic version of Abdullah Ibn El-Muqafa. The series comprises twenty six episodes of 23 minutes each, and is scheduled to join JCC’s programmes for the new season starting this month.

Kalila wa Dimna is a translation of a collection of fables first found in the Sanskrit language originating in India. The fables are told through two main figures — the jackals Kalila and Dimna. The main narrator is the philosopher Bidpai who wrote these fables, in an effort to implant wisdom, charity and justice in the hardhearted King Dabshalim.
