Mövenpick goes for quadruple whammy

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has unveiled details and opening dates of four brand new Dubai properties it will manage, all of which are currently under construction.

Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has unveiled details and opening dates of four brand new Dubai properties it will manage, all of which are currently under construction.

The Swiss premium hotel chain, which already operates the Mövenpick Bur Dubai, will open the four hotels in rapid succession in 2007 – the Mövenpick Hotel Deira in September, the Mövenpick Resort Oceana, Palm Jumeirah in October, the Mövenpick Resort & Spa, Palm Jumeirah in November, and the Ibn Battuta Hotel Dubai in December.

Gastronomy, spa and wellness concepts, and Mövenpick’s “sincere and hearfelt” Swiss hospitality will be the unique selling points across all four properties, according to Thomas Tapken, general manager and regional manager, Dubai, Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts.

“We will have three completely different spas and each will be an outstanding feature of their respective property,” he said. “We will also have 32 F&B outlets across 19 different themes. We will make them destination restaurants where people will go to be entertained.”

The five-star Mövenpick Hotel Deira, located five minutes from Dubai’s Gold Souq, will comprise 223 guestrooms, the Robatayaki Japanese Grill Restaurant, a pool bar, six meeting rooms, business centre and a ballroom catering to 500 people, when it opens in September.

Next up, the five-star Mövenpick Resort Oceana, Palm Jumeirah, located on the Palm’s trunk, will feature 249 rooms including 50 executive rooms, 142 serviced apartments, a ballroom catering to 250 guests, and an infinity edge pool.

Additional key features include a Thalasso Spa, Bar and Forno Arabic Café, Zuma Japanese restaurant, and The Wellness Bar.

Food outlets will be a key selling point at the five-star deluxe Mövenpick Resort & Spa, Palm Jumeirah, where specialty restaurants cover Asian, seafood and spa cuisine.

The property’s Asia Spa will comprise 12 treatment rooms and other facilities of note include a large pool, tennis courts, health and fitness centre, water sports and kids clubs, three meeting rooms and a 250-guest capacity ballroom.

The property is being built on the outer crescent of the Palm and boasts 293 rooms, an executive floor, and a Dubai first – water homes built on stilts over the sea.

And last but not least, the five-star Ibn Battuta Hotel, accessible through a 60-metre high gate and adjacent to the world’s largest themed shopping centre, Ibn Battuta Mall, boasts 396 guestrooms and 166 serviced apartments. Rooms on three of the floors feature reception and lounge areas.

The Moroccan-style property will feature the only ladies-only Hammam in Dubai. Additional attributes include Moroccan, Persian, Chinese and Southern Indian restaurants, four meeting rooms, a ballroom catering to 500 guests, a 20-metre lap pool, health centre and a gourmet shop.

Tapken is currently in the process of selecting 2200 staff to work across all four properties, but said he would recruit some staff from Mövenpick’s 55 existing hotels to work in key positions such as head of departments.In addition, a Mövenpick taskforce will oversee the opening of each hotel.

The search for a sales and marketing director is also in full swing, and Tapken said the first major promotional push would take place at ATM in May, where Mövenpick will erect a sizeable stand.

From a marketing perspective, Tapken said the Deira property would be pitched “below the JW Marriott”, but “higher than the Renaissance” and the Oceania would be “in the same competitive set as Le Royal Meridien Dubai”.

“We hope the Resort & Spa will be on the same level as the Royal Mirage and Ibn Battuta will be pitched against Kempinski Mall of the Emirates,” he added.

There are currently 25 hotels under construction that Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts is set to manage, 15 of which are located in the Middle East, India and Asia Pacific. An additional 10 in this region are “under negotiation”.

The company plans to hit the 100-property mark internationally by 2010.
