Aktor leads Doha design-build

Greek firm joins Qatari Al Darwish, Cybarco and Cimolai to carry out US $199 million airline support facilities contract

A consortium led by Aktor, a unit of Greek construction group Hellenic Technodomiki, is set to begin work on the airline support facilities at New Doha International Airport after winning the US $199 million (QR715 million) design and build contract.

The consortium is made up of Qatari Al Darwish Engineering, Cypriot construction firm, Cybarco, and Italian construction group, Cimolai.

According to a statement by Aktor, the company leads the joint venture with a 40% share, and the project is expected to further strengthen its position in the Middle East.

“Preserving its leading position in Greece in the field of construction through its subsidiary company Aktor SA, Hellenic Technodomik Group continues, at the same time, its efforts on an international level to establish and transform Aktor SA into a ‘regional player’, both in the Balkans and the Middle East,” said the statement.

Work involves the construction of two aircraft hangars (one covering 20,000m2 and the other covering 10,000m2), a catering facility (that will cover an area of 22,000m2), additional buildings covering an area of 9,500m2, an aircraft maintenance centre that will cover an area of 92,000m2, as well as a cargo warehouse facility that will have the capacity to store and handle 750,000 tonnes a year and will cover an area of 49,000m2.

The consortium signed the deal, due for completion in December 2008, with the airport’s steering committee.

The entire airport project is thought to be worth $5 billion. US company, Bechtel, was appointed engineering, procurement and construction management contractor in 2004, while other companies involved in the project include Turkish contractor, Yuksel, Malaysia’s Gamuda and Takenaka of Japan.

Scheduled for completion in 2015, construction of the entire airport will be carried out in three phases.
