3Com unveils latest IP phone

Networking player 3Com has unveiled a new wireless, session initiation protocol (SIP) based IP phone that it claims offers enterprise users greater mobility by delivering full-featured voice over IP (VoIP) on a wireless LAN.

The 3Com 3108 wireless phone, which operates on a wireless LAN (802.11b/g) infrastructure, enables users to roam a building or campus environment and stay connected with customers, partners and colleagues while utilising VoIP, wireless e-mail and data applications.

According to 3Com, the benefits of the 3108 wireless phone include ensuring that users are connected to the enterprise phone system and can receive calls destined for their desks regardless of where they are in the building or campus environment.

3Com reckons that its latest kit is ideal for people working in jobs that require a mobile workforce such as education, government, healthcare and retail. Users can use the 3108 wireless phone to transfer calls to other departments, gain access to a live receptionist and listen to office voicemail. These are delivered with none of the expensive per minute usage fees associated with cellular phone use.

“In today’s interactive world, many employees are no longer spending hours tied to their desks. To be productive, employees have to be mobile to effectively engage customers, solve problems and collaborate with partners and other employees,” said Brian Allain, VP and general manager of 3Com’s data and voice business unit.

“Organisations know the cost savings and business benefits of VoIP and the flexibility a wireless infrastructure deliver. This phone brings these capabilities together. With 3Com, customers can go to a single vendor to provide all of the elements of a secure, converged network — IP telephony, wireless and data switches, intrusion prevention systems (IPS) and a single service organisation to provide support and make sure it all works,” he added.

The 3108 wireless phone works with 3Com NBX and 3Com wireless networking solutions as part of a complete VoIP solution. 3Com VCX is scheduled to support the 3108 wireless phone in early 2007. The phone, which features a sleek clamshell flip form factor with a high quality colour display, is available through 3Com distributors and channel partners with a list price of US$415.
