Workers avoid blaze in camp

Site workers had a lucky escape when a fire broke out at their labour camp in Dubai last week

Site workers had a lucky escape when a fire broke out at their labour camp in Dubai last week.

Two large portacabins were destroyed by the blaze at the Arabtec labour camp, located near the Arabian Ranches development.

Nobody was in the buildings at the time.

An Arabtec insider said: “The fire has burned down two large portacabins but there have been no casualties. I believe the fire started due to a short-circuit. Around 100 people have been affected and have been accommodated within the camp itself.”

According to a worker at the camp, the fire broke out at about 8.30am on 14 September, when over 2,000 workers who live at the facility were already at work on the nearby construction site.

It is the second labour camp fire to have been reported in Dubai in the last four months.
In July, Dhabi Contracting’s labour camp in Al Awir also suffered fire damage.
