Service charge debate result still hanging in the balance

UAE travel agents, European airlines, IATA and GDS providers are yet to reach a agreement on how agencies can best to adopt a service fee structure.

UAE travel agents, European airlines, IATA and GDS providers are yet to reach a agreement on how agencies can best to adopt a service fee structure.
All four parties have met to discuss the issue on numerous occasions since January 1, when several European airlines slashed travel agent commission to zero in the UAE, but a unanimous decision has not been reached.
“We are still in the process of working out the best solution, which is difficult now that people are busy with summer bookings, but we are confident of reaching a decision some time soon,” Labib Jaroudi manager of the Dubai Travel & Tour Agents Group (DTTAG), told ATN.
Airlines approached by ATN remained tight-lipped about their views on the issue, however, Quintin Scholtz, regional manager, UAE and Oman, Sabre Travel Network Middle East, revealed that GDS providers were being proactive in devising a solution to suit all parties involved.
“The way forward is to ensure GDS systems make the service fee transparent to the customer so the amount they pay [in addition to the airfare] it is printed out [separately] on the ticket or invoice,” he said.
