Mobily awards Ericsson 2G and 3G contract

On May 25, Mobily celebrated its first year of operation, counting 3.83 million subscribers and a network covering over 65 Saudi cities and more than 13,000 kilometres of highway.

Saudi Arabian operator Mobily has selected Ericsson to build its HSPA enabled 3G network and to deliver a major expansion of existing GSM network, including Ericsson Mobile Softswitch solution, radio, transmission and core equipment.

Under the agreement Ericsson will deliver equipment and services to build Mobily's 3G network with full HSPA functionality.

HSPA offers operators more than double the system capacity of WCDMA and dramatically shortens response times for interactive services, improving the end users’ experience when using broadband services.

"We are pleased to provide Mobily with our advanced solutions for HSPA and mobile softswitch, that provide it with a solid platform for next generation services and underline its innovative profile in the market," said Bo-Erik Dahlstrom, president Ericsson Middle East.

Last month Saudi Telecom Company (STC) announced the launch of 3G, having started testing the service in 2005. STC’s Al Jawal mobile operation plans to roll out the largest 3G network in the Middle East and will activate a full service including: voice and video calls, live TV and HSDPA technology, running at speeds of up to 1.5Mbps. The operator already has over 3,000 customers testing and using the service.

On May 25, Mobily celebrated its first year of operation, counting 3.83 million subscribers and a network covering over 65 Saudi cities and more than 13,000 kilometres of highway, excluding national roaming agreements with the incumbent mobile provider, Al Jawal.
