Publishers discuss creation of industry body

A UAE publishers association has moved a step closer after two Dubai-based publishers held talks about creating an industry body.

A UAE publishers association has moved a step closer after two Dubai-based publishers held talks about creating an industry body.

Bosses from ITP, publisher of Campaign, and Motivate Publishing, say they want to push forward the creation of an association in order to champion better standards
in publishing.

At the top of the association’s list of priorities will be the issue of circulation audits. Other issues, such as the need for greater transparency, are also likely to be on the agenda.

Several other publishers, including Emirates Media, AMG, Al Khaleej, Gulf News, Khaleej Times and Gray Business Communications, have been approached to join.

Walid Akawi, CEO at ITP, said: “Publishers need to get together and talk about the issues that confront our industry for the benefit of all those involved.”

Ian Fairservice, managing partner at Motivate Publishing, said an exploratory meeting had been scheduled for the end of the month to discuss the association’s objectives.
He said: “The media is an extremely important part of overall development here and it needs to be properly
addressed with all the main players sitting together.”

Marwan Rizk, vice president and area director of the IAA and chairman of the Circulation Audit Steering Organisation, said he wanted the association to avoid mistakes of the past.
“We have been here before and it didn’t happen. Now I want the promises to become reality and I hope the people behind this will make sure it is serious.”
