Pioneer goes Blu

With the launch of its BDR-101A internal drive for PCs, Pioneer has become one of the first vendors to ship Blu-ray write capable drives.

This optical drive is compatible with BD-R (Blu-ray Disc recordable) and BD-RE (Blu-ray Disc rewriteable) media in addition to standard DVD-/+RW media (the drive is also backward compatible with CD media).

Pioneer claims the drive can write to BD-R and BD-RE media at 2x speed, while burning to standard DVD media can be accomplished at 8x. In terms of bundled software and media, Pioneer supplies Sonic Solution’s Roxio Blu-ray software and blank media from TDK that can store up to 25Gbytes of data.

Pioneer has also equipped the drive with features designed to aid performance such as Ultra DRA and Limit Equaliser LSI. The former is designed to reduce any vibrations that may occur from spinning discs at high velocities, while the latter improves reading reliability. Finally, a ‘Multi-Effect Liquid Crystal Tilt Compensator’ improves recording and playback by adding corrections to the read/write laser. This helps to avoid problems caused by discs that might be tilted or have slight thickness imperfections.

The BDR-101A is expected in stores here by the end of June and is likely to retail for a price $1000.
