Japanese construction company Takenaka Corp. has won a contract worth US $243 million (QR884.5 million) on the New Doha International Airport in Qatar.

The contract, won in joint venture with local firm Construction Development Company, will see Takenaka build a new terminal building for the Royal Family, as a well as parking facilities and a mosque. The work is scheduled for completion by May 2008.

Takenaka, which has worked on airport projects in eight other countries worldwide, has targeted projects overseas in the face of falling investment in public works projects in Japan.

In January 2004, US engineering firm Bechtel was awarded the contract to design, construct and project manage the $5.5 billion airport.

Passenger capacity will be boosted to 12 million when
the first phase of the airport is competed in 2009, and it will eventually accommodate 50 million people once fully operational in 2015.
